about
"At the song's core sits my need for creative freedom, and my urge to forever keep my creative freedom 100% my own. Island is also about feeling pigeon-holed to one genre, one emotional state, as the music and the self is being projected to the outside world in a way that often feels alienating and out of one's own control. It's about sometimes feeling a bit invaded, being asked to answer questions that are incredibly intimate and personal within a very public setting. It's a sort of reminder to always keep my creativity free and my personal space personal, to allow myself, in the choices I make in my career, to retain the freedom to make the music I want to make, work with the people I want to work with, and let them in turn be creatively free when collaborating with me."
lyrics
It’s not what it seems
The glitter and the game
I’m not who I seem
I’m not some eager maid
To shape, to break, to recreate
I am an island
And here I’ll keep
Sifting art to gain
Make pennies from the pain
The glitter and the game
Forms a frightening refrain
To shape, to break, to recreate
I am an island
Hear my lines and you will know
All you’ll ever know of me
I have shared my cheapest thoughts
And my deepest lust
Isn’t that enough?
Don’t ask me what I mean
Or tell me what to be
I am not naive
Oh honey, I am free
To shape, to break, to recreate
I am an island, I am an island
Hear my lines and you will know
All you’ll ever know of me
I have shared my cheapest thoughts
And my deepest lust
Isn’t that enough?
